2nd Annual Hot Sauce Label Design Competition: Enter Now, Then Come to the Judging Event on May 20th

The CADC is hosting our 2nd Annual Hot Sauce Label Design competition. A perfect event to whet your inspiration and clear your sinuses of any congested creative that might be clogging your imagination.

ADMISSION:
$5 members
$10 non-members
FREE for Foundation Members (please RSVP)

Entry cost is $15 for one and $20 dollars for two. However, if you’re feeling zesty and want to enter more than one, we won’t extinguish your artistic flame. It will be an additional $5 for every entry over two entries.

Entries should be sent as PDFs to shannon@cadc.org. Entry fees can be paid online here, or by check payable to CADC to P.O. Box 424, New London, CT 06320.

The sauce for this sizzling event is being donated directly from the Hot Sauce Headquarters (HSH).

All entries will be judged Thursday, May 20 at the event by HSH representatives. The winner will receive $100 + a case of the actual sauce with the victor’s label printed on them.

That’s not all… the winning design will also be placed on the vendor’s site and will receive royalties from all online purchases of that particular sauce. The second & third prize winners will receive $50 dollars.

There are 3 names to choose from (see below). The types of peppers used for each sauce are as follows:

Afterlife = Ghost Pepper
Hot Hippo = Perri Perri Pepper
Radical Red = Cayenne Pepper

All 3 Sauces are real sauces produced by the Hot Sauce Headquarters.

Our Opening:
NFP Sports has a Traffic Coordinator position available in the Production Department. The candidate will coordinate creative projects within the Production and Marketing departments to ensure projects are completed accurately and on time.

Responsibilities of the Traffic Coordinator include but are not limited to reviewing and responding to all creative requests to finalize information, prioritize, schedule project milestones and track and report daily status of projects within a fast-paced creative environment.

Requirements for the position:
BA or BS in Graphic Design
10 years of experience
Complete knowledge of the total print production process
Working knowledge of purchasing procedures
Digital printing and digital file transfer experience
Cost estimating (using pre-set unit costs and mathematical computations)
Job scheduling, production traffic control and record keeping
Experience in Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office

April 29: Leading Women — SOLD OUT!

Join us as we celebrate the contributions women have made in our field and in our state. Our panel of Female Agency Owners will give their perspective on the pros and cons of being female in a traditionally male-dominated field, if equality has been achieved or if there is still work to be done, and what their gender brings to the table for both clients and employees.

For this unique and special event, we’re taking over Kitchen Zinc, the latest New Haven hotspot, and closing it to the public. Billed as “Artisan Pizza & Bar,” you’ll get just that: pizza and a cash bar.

Moderating the evening is Rena DeBortoli, a former CADC President and former creative director at Sonalysts, who now continues to serve on our Board and run her own successful studio, Rena DeBortoli Design.

Pamela Williams, Williams & House
Pam is co-founder, creative director and partner of Williams and House, a strategic communications practice, which is best known nationally for its results-focused work in the graphic arts industry. The company is renowned for its expertise in strategic planning, media relations and relationship marketing and has developed, launched and managed brands as well as created and implemented dozens of seamless, multi-faceted marketing communications programs for leading brands and associations. Williams’s accumulated knowledge of the design and publishing industry, coupled with her experience of how to effectively market to it, is a unique combination that has been praised by clients.

Williams has been an AIGA member for more than a decade and has done a great deal to assist with programming both by managing and supporting dozens of AIGA events all around the country. She has authored articles in Communication Arts, STEP inside design, HOW, Graphis, Critique and Graphic Design: USA and has also published the book Breaking into Product Design, as well as authoring dozens of design-related case studies and stories.

Noemi Kearns, How 2 Design
Noemi is the frontwoman and founding Principal and superstar diva of How 2 Design. From her truly rockin’ website bio: “Before forming the group in 1994, Noemi made her start as a solo performer in 1989, gathering a huge fan base right from the beginning. Her unique talent, style and savvy business sense is what led Noemi to pursue the global sensation we know today as How 2 Design. Her unmatched creative vision is the driving force behind the group. She blends serious strategic chops with a refined artistic soul: a celebrated virtuoso.”

When not in “the studio,” Noemi spends her time in Guilford with husband Ted and three children, Nolan, Zophia and Sadie Bea.

Noemi has been a VP and Treasurer of CADC, instructor and board member at Middlesex Community College, Guest Lecturer at the University of Connecticut and University of New Haven, and a guest judge for the Ad Club of Westchester.

Ali Parmelee , Think Creative Group
Ali is the creative director and co-owner of think creative group. Her creative approach is just like her — quirky and sassy, but still completely professional (when need be.)

Ali has gained extensive experience working in branding and marketing for more than a decade. After receiving her B.A. for both Marketing Communications and Business Management from Quinnipiac University, she has built her career — and clients’ businesses — by crafting strategic marketing messages.

think creative group is an award-winning firm that primarily works within the non-profit, entertainment/tourism and building and developer industries. think takes brand strategies and applies them to the online world by developing websites, blogs, emarketing, online advertising and social media campaigns. They also figure out how to transcend online brands from “virtuality” to reality with print collateral, advertising and more.

Ali lives with husband Joel Waggener (a designer at Think) and daughter Lucy.

Stacey Dyer, Triple Frog
Stacey is co-owner and creative director at Triple Frog, who specialize in creating branded experiences for specially selected clients. The company name comes from Stacey’s obsession with frogs and the number 3 — both a recurring, positive presence in her life.

Stacey received her BFA in Painting from the Hartford Art School, and gained experience at Loctite, Red Rocket (now Milk) and MD&C before forming Triple Frog.

Stacey is also an accomplished singer, formerly of a hard rock band that was prominent in the local scene, and currently as the lead of fledgling jazz ensemble.

Event Wrap-up:
2010 Student Conference and Scholarship Competition

The 2010 Student Conference and Scholarship Competition, hosted by the CADC for over 10 years, was held on Saturday, April 27th at Sacred Heart University. The conference drew approximately 65 students from across Connecticut.

The event kicked off with keynote speaker Scott Lerman, principal of Lucid Brands, and continued through presentations from Darryl Ohrt and Chris Spada of Humongo, illustrator Adam Niklewicz, photographer John Madere and Kira Karlstrom of ESPN.

Students continued to receive career advice during the afternoon sessions. These programs gave students a chance to be in smaller, more intimate groups. Students participated in a recent graduate panel discussion as well as presentations from creativeplacement’s kHyal and Karl Heine and Mohawk Paper’s Lee Moody.

And let’s not forget the inaugural visit from BookDrive’s Mobile Unit, bringing inspiration to the students through donated previously-owned books and magazines.

Two scholarships and two honorable mentions were awarded to students, whose portfolios demonstrated exceptional ability. The winners were:
